(Bud) Chaddock, a meat
wrapper at a Safe - way
store in Concord, learned
many important lessons in
life from his father.
Among them was the importance of
working at a Union job. “My
dad was a Union member
from the 1950s through the
’70s,” Chaddock recalled.
“He worked in a shipyard and on
a ship. He always said that Union
jobs have better wages, benefits
and job security. That stuck
with me.”
Chaddock also acquired from his
father a love for fishing and the outdoors. “When he lived
in Minnesota, Dad was an avid fisherman, and a fur trapper
and trader,” the younger Chaddock said.
Chaddock’s first job was in the commercial fishing
industry. He subsequently worked
for a boat builder.

Justin, near their
friend’s cabin at Kootenai Falls, Mont.
“I worked for a company that had government contracts,”
he said. “Those contracts dried up during the recession in the early
1980s.
“First thing I did at that time was apply for a
Union job at Hughes Markets in the Los Angeles area,” he said. He was
hired immediately and worked at Hughes until he moved to Northern
California.
“I have a friend who owns a 28-acre ranch in Montana,”
Chaddock said. “Our family [wife, Donna, and 11-year old son,
Justin] spends two to four
weeks there each year. His property
has a creek on it that has
six different kinds of trout.
It makes for terrific fishing.” He
also enjoys offshore fishing
for albacore tuna. About
20 years ago, Chaddock
started collecting old
lures and reels. |
“At first, it was just a hobby,” he said. “But it
quickly turned into my passion.
“I am always on the lookout for old fishing
equipment and try to get the word out to family and friends before
someone winds up throwing it away.”
Chaddock is an active member of the Old Reel Collectors
Association and the National Fish Lure Collectors
Club. “We trade, sell
and swap among ourselves,” he said. “Once
or twice a year, I attend large trade shows in Santa Rosa
or Bakersfield. But I don’t do that as much as I used to.”
When he is not fishing, Chaddock spends as much time
as he can with his son, Justin.
“He loves to go fishing, of
course,” Chaddock said. “But
he is also involved in a variety of other sports activities
and I enjoy watching him participate.”
