11-year-old Shana Hocking is Walmart campaign’s littlest warrior

Shana Hocking may be only 11 years old, yet she knows about the benefits of working Union.

“My mom’s best friend is active in the Union,” Shana said. “When she comes over to our home, she is always talking about her work fighting Walmart.”

Those conversations motivated Shana to research what Walmart is all about. “I Googled ‘Walmart’ and found WakeUpWalmart.com,” she said. “I also found a few other sites that told how bad it is to work there and how badly they treat their employees.”

Shana knows how well Union employees are treated. “My mom was a member of the Union,” Shana said. “She was always telling us how much she liked the pay and health insurance.

“I heard about that since I was little. I want to see more people become Union members. That’s why I want to do everything I can to fight Walmart.”

Shana’s mom, Heidi Hocking, worked at Rite Aid in Citrus Heights until recently, when she left to return to school.

“My husband is self employed,” Heidi said. “Those health benefits made a real difference for us.” Shana is in sixth grade.

“I let them know what I found out about Walmart,” Shana said. “I convinced my best friend, Jordan, not to shop there and I’m working on a few others I know.

“Right now, they don’t want to listen to me, but I plan to keep it up because it’s important.”

Heidi said she is proud of her daughter. “She is resourceful and she is a fighter,” Heidi said. “What more could you ask for?”
